Outbreak Company Series Review

I know that I’ve been making episodic reviews of anime up until now, but, truth be told, that takes a lot of time (20 mins per episode+around 2 hours for reviewing) and, right now, time is a luxury commodity for me ^^’ (as you could have noticed from my prolonged absence). As such, I plan to make episodic reviews of only one or two series and then put up a review for the other series as a whole, which is kinder to my schedule.

So, Outbreak Company was one of he series in the past season’s to-watch list. I started watching it knowing that it would be your typical moe-filled anime, and, although I do enjoy moe, there is so much I can take in a single season until I’m fed up. However, never once did Outbreak Company felt like it was exaggerating the moe-factor, and it made for a very decent watch :).

Plot: (6/10)
As expected of a moe-anime, the plot was fairly nonexistent, being mainly an episodic series without much of a “main-arc”. Still, it was a fairly decent watch, not even a single time did it felt boring. The idea of Japan exporting Otaku Culture to an undeveloped land is interesting and something new in the recent outbreak of Highschool-Slice-of-Life-Moeshit that spammed the industry in the past few years. Even more, they made it more interesting by adding an otaku (even more, a hikikomori) as the cornerstone of the endeavor.

I agree!

I agree!

Also, this series managed to approach some unusual themes, like equality, racism and class differentiation in society to a certain extent. All in all, the story was pretty much interesting, even if the main plotline was close to null.

Characters: (7/10)
In general the characters where very likeable (mainly Miusel (>.<))

Shinichi is your typical male MC, devoid of any social skills and very awkward at first (and a hikikomori to boot), a unexpected “Harem-King” (because, let’s face it, every MC like that ends up becoming a “Harem-King”), yet quick of mind and hero-ish when it is needed (perhaps due to reading too much manga and watching too much anime). However, he is fairly powerless, so he ends up being saved by the girls all the time. Not really that much of a memorable character, but he’s likeable.

Miusel is the main moe-source of the series. A half-elf who has lived her entire life bearing the stigma of being a mixed breed, she developed feelings for Shinichi due to him treating her like an equal and not just as a maid/”lesser being”. She is very capable in all house-keeping tasks, proficient in attack magic and cares about the MC a lot. Also, her moe-level is high, I must say :P. Although not an outstanding character (you probably won’t remember her in a year or so), she is, by far, the most appealing character in the whole series.

Outbreak Company - 09

Petrarca fills both the tsundere and loli roles in this series. She is a petite girl (ok, she’s as flat as a plank) that rules over the kingdom of Eldant. She starts developing feelings for Shinichi due to his over-openness and lack of restraint with her. Sincerely, I really disliked her. She was pretty much there just for the loli-moe (although she had her moments), not really adding much to the series overall.

The onli pic of Petrarca I can stand, 'cause Mahou Shoujo FTW!

The onli pic of Petrarca I can stand, ’cause Mahou Shoujo FTW!

As for supporting characters, we had Minori, the female JSDF officer responsible for Shinichi’s safety and a BL lover. She was a very amusing character throughout the series, and portrayed well the struggle between doing your job and doing what is right. Out of all the support characters, she was the best one. As for the the others, no one stood out much (not even the inumimi-girl whose name I can’t remember and I’m too lazy to look it up).

Them maids... :3

Them maids… :3

Visuals: (6/10)
As for the illustrations and animation, the art style is clearly not my favourite, although one cannot call it bad. it is well done overall, although some more attention to details would have been a good improvement. The animation was pretty normal, nothing out of this world, although some scenes could have benefited from more attention and care (and a few more frames) in the animation.

Overall, it was an interesting and enjoyable series. I give it a 6,5/10 (you can round it up to 7)

Non Non Biyori Episode 2

Time for some more Non Non Biyori!

I know I didn’t write much about it the first episode, and I believe I will never write much about it because, let’s face it, it doesn’t have anything of interest asides being filed with moe and cuteness (which is always good :D)

This episode is, again, cute girls being cute. It begins with a popular blackboard eraser-trap backfiring and hitting Komari in the head, only to be “cleaned” by Hotaru, who, instead of cleaning the chalk dust off her head, ends up “molesting” (as in patting the hell out of her head) Komari in a scene that reeks of yuri.

Afterwards, Komari goes to Hotaru’s house to play, and Hotaru, that has a huge “crush” on Komari, gets all dressed up to meet her, to the point that Komari can’t even recognise her and mistakes her for an older person. And yeah, that sums it up. More moe, more light-hearted comedy. Always fun 😀

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 02 [356A6A2A].mkv_snapshot_00.53_[2013.12.28_04.46.12]

To be honest, their teacher is amazing… How did she managed to not be fired is just awesome!

Non Non Biyori Episode 1 Review

So, I just started watching Non Non Biyori because I felt like having a change of pace and watch some moe anime… And Non Non Biyori doesn’t disappoint in that regard.

The serie's main loli

The series’ main loli

While the first episode is completely devoid of any plot whatsoever, we get to see cute girls being cute just for the sake of it, and that’s always nice.

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_06.55_[2013.12.27_04.20.27]

The series takes place in a very small rural town, with only 4 students, each of a different grade. Every student is placed in the same classroom, due to insufficient number of students to have a class of each grade. And then a transfer student comes from Tokyo, a breath of fresh air in town. The girls all become interested in this new student, who is a very shy and cute girl. And then the girls do more cute stuff, a guy gets stuck inside the school’s foundations, more cute stuff, a sakura tree scene, and Renge realizes that they “live in the sticks”. And that pretty much sums the episode.

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_11.16_[2013.12.27_04.25.31]

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_12.16_[2013.12.27_04.26.39]

All characters are cute, although none of them has, as of the first episode, that memorable feeling of some characters. Also, the directing/animation is nothing extraordinary, it is your typical low-risk high-gain moe anime.

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_13.54_[2013.12.27_04.28.20]

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_14.30_[2013.12.27_04.28.58]

Probably the first episode’s most interesting thing was the appearance of this racoon dog ^^’

Well, twintails and a loli are a sure-fire recipe for moe

Well, twintails and a loli are a sure-fire recipe for moe

[FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_17.42_[2013.12.27_04.32.52] [FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_19.23_[2013.12.27_04.34.41] [FFF] Non Non Biyori - 01 [578B3C97].mkv_snapshot_22.01_[2013.12.27_04.37.45]

And that’s pretty much it. Cute girls doing cute stuff. Always nice once in a while, but I’m getting tired of all this moe-shit anime that fills the season roosters… Japanese Authors/Animators/Directors/Franchise owners, PLEASE be a bit more risk friendly! You are drowning the entire anime industry in moe-shit due to being scared of introducing something new and different!

Steins;Gate Movie Review

So, I’ve just seen Steins;Gate – Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu (Steins;Gate The Movie – Burdened Domain of Deja vu), and I really came crashing down…. THE MOVIE IS AWESOME! I even cried! It was a feelings-rollercoaster, with a big dose of emotion-punch-in-the-gut! Really, the idea of making Makise save Okabe, making her acknowledge what he suffered during his time-leaps and making her come to terms with her own feeling is a stroke of a genius!

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.26.50_[2013.12.27_01.56.42]

The story is just awesome. One year after the anime’s timeline, Makise returns to Japan to pay a visit to our friends from the Future Gadget Lab, only to return to her tsundere self as soon as she sees Okabe. Then Okabe is assaulted by a series of “delusions”, glimpses of his experiences in other time lines that are creeping into his mind, which seem too real to be just “dreams” or illusions, until suddenly PUFF, Okabe is no more, leaving a completely freaked-out Makise to save his ass 😛

I cried in this scene...

I cried in this scene…

In a saddening turn, everyone forgets about him, as if his existence was entirely removed from the Steins;Gate world line. However, a lingering feeling of loneliness, of something-is-not-right-ness takes the entire crew, leaving hints that he once was there

Then, our beloved Amane returns, just in time to make Makise regain her memories of Okabe, and “rescue” him from the R world line. Makise remakes the Time Leap Machine (I don’t remember it’s Future Gadget number, sorry ^^’) and tries to save Okabe, just to have him tell her to forget about him and move on.

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_00.51.07_[2013.12.27_01.46.25]

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_00.55.32_[2013.12.27_01.47.23]

Unfortunately, Makise is still the same stubborn girl as always (although I must say I love her tsundere side 😀 ), and due to her uneasiness to come true with her own feelings for Okabe, she decides to continue living in this kind of world, without him. However, *tuturut!* Amane to the rescue! She grabs Makise, makes her ride the Time Machine built by the future Makise and Daru, and sends her back to 2005 (a date chosen by Makise), only to make Okabe die. She then comes back and, to no surprise, is in shock and decides to not try to save him, to just accept reality.

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.07.26_[2013.12.27_01.48.48] [WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.10.53_[2013.12.27_01.50.10] [WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.11.14_[2013.12.27_01.50.27]

However, everyone starts to have deja vu’s, remembering bits about Okabe and she makes her own resolve to save him, by (god knows why) kissing the young Okabe after telling him about Hououin Kyouma (also, isn’t kissing a young boy rape? XD)

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.16.23_[2013.12.27_01.51.17]

This is clearly child abuse….

Apparently, that one kiss was enough to make Okabe realize that he was living in the “real” world, forcing his Reading Steiner to stop fluctuating and keeping him in the Steins;Gate world line.

[WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.26.21_[2013.12.27_01.53.12] [WhyNot] Steins;Gate - Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu [BD 720p AAC][034B1175].mkv_snapshot_01.26.50_[2013.12.27_01.56.42]

Man, what a great movie… I really loved Steins;Gate, it was one of the best series I ever saw, and this movie just brought back that feeling of awesomeness and mental breakdown I had when I watched the anime…

And now, back to 3 school reports due tomorrow and finishing my Outbreak Company review!

Coppelion Episode 2 Review

I know this episode aired a long time ago, but I haven’t had time to review it, so please forgive me ^^’.

Starting the review, one of the good things I found in this episode is the OP song. I really like it! The music’s rythm and melody (as in the music itself, not the lyrics ’cause I was finishing a paper when I heard it and didn’t read them ^^’) really go along with the show’s theme.

[Anime-Koi] Coppelion - 02 [h264-720p][08A06DCC].mkv_snapshot_00.37_[2013.11.23_01.37.21]

Man, a highschooler with a badge and a gun… badass XD

Man, Ibara's so cute!

Man, Ibara’s so cute!

Taeko's an animal lover huh?

Taeko’s an animal lover huh?

In this episode, things finally get interesting, with a few survivors appearing. Apparently, they were locked in a prison nearby when the meltdown occured, and took advantage of it to escape allong with other prisioners. They managed to find a radiation-free room inside an old hospital, and took refuge there. They even managed to rig a few solar panels to provide electricity to their refuge. BTW, is it just me or this series reminds me of the Fallout games? XD

WTF? What are those antennas?

[Anime-Koi] Coppelion - 02 [h264-720p][08A06DCC].mkv_snapshot_10.01_[2013.11.23_02.53.48]

Anyway, in this episode we get more insight regarding the truth behind Ibara’s, Aoi’s and Taeko’s past. We learnt in the first episode that they were genetically engineered to be radiation resistant, and in this episode the name Coppelion is explained. It is a bit of a wordplay on Coppelia, a French ballet comedy about a dancing doll, hence the name Coppelion, an analogy to the “dolls” that are our three heroines. It is also stated, at least for Ibara, that all of her life was passed training for this rescue mission.

So, a wolf can be so obedient as to wait for someone he just met and search for someone just by her smell without training?

[Anime-Koi] Coppelion - 02 [h264-720p][08A06DCC].mkv_snapshot_15.02_[2013.11.23_02.06.21]

I don’t know if it’s just me, but this series really brings out the theme of humanity, what means to be human in the form of 3 cute highschoolers; They are faced with a constant doubt about their humanity, if they really are just a bunch of puppets. Also, they are faced with though decisions, like choosing to save a young girl instead of it’s mother, and that might bring about a great growth of the characters. I really have high hopes for what this series will be able to pull off in these philosophical questions.

Also, one of the things I noticed the most was that the producers gave much more screen time to Aoi and Taeko, something which you migh recall didn’t happened much in the first episode. We finally see more of their personality, mainly Aoi’s gentle and caring side; to be honest, I find them to be really are good characters, but Ibara is still the best XD.

[Anime-Koi] Coppelion - 02 [h264-720p][08A06DCC].mkv_snapshot_19.45_[2013.11.23_02.24.15]

Regarding the more technical aspects, I can’t stop praising the director… He did a wonderfull job with this series, nothing was left out: crumbling floors, hair fluttering, light flare effects and glare, everything was just perfect, I really can’t say anything bad about it. Also, I really like they’re choice of colour palette. It is mainly brownish tones, wich intensify the idea of lonelyness and desolation of the city, while also choosing very bright and vivid greens and blues for the grass and the sky respectivelly, in a way showing that nature has thrived in the past 20 years.

[Anime-Koi] Coppelion - 02 [h264-720p][08A06DCC].mkv_snapshot_13.34_[2013.11.23_02.55.15]

Coppelion Episode 1 – First impressions

Ah, schoolgirls with guns… Not enough of these shows nowadays :D.

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_00.30_[2013.10.17_23.08.02]

One of the most striking aspects of this episode (and I hope of it’s series’) is it’s art. The backgrounds are just simply beautiful! Vibrant with colour, warm… It makes me want to go there to bask in the sun while I doze off :P. You can clearly see how much time and effort went to designing these, in my opinion, award-winning sceneries, which contrast with the use of 3D or “stock-like” images used in most recent anime.

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_00.09_[2013.10.17_23.07.03]The character design is somewhat weird… Sometimes I really like the design, while in the next scene it seems that the characters are just a rough sketch… I really hope that it becomes more linear in the future. However, no matter what you might say, Ibara’s design is just beautiful…

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_00.51_[2013.10.17_23.09.12]

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_01.06_[2013.10.17_23.09.48]

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.17_[2013.10.17_23.31.55]

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.33_[2013.10.17_23.35.13]

The story has a pretty weird feel to it… I find it dark, mainly due to the series’s setting and lack of background info, but there’s this warm vibe that it gives off. I really can’t describe it better. To put the feeling into words, imagine someone is telling you a creepy story while you’re basking under a tree, in the middle of a plain in mid-summer. Yes, the feeling is that weird. It also touches some interesting subjects, like the humanity of lab-bred humans, and what makes us human. That’s really evident when Ibara injects herself with some nutrient-serum instead of eating, and one of the girls freaks out, because she wants to believe she’s still human, not just a lab rat.

[HorribleSubs] Coppelion - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.16_[2013.10.17_23.34.41]

Regarding the characters, Ibara is just amazing! She’s sure of herself, while also being kind hearted. She disobeyed her orders just to give a rad-poisoned man a slight chance at survival, only to later point a gun at her boss claiming that she would save every single person she would find. From the entire cast, she’s the one who stood out most, and I believe she’ll be responsible for most of the series’ success.

The other two “main” characters are so unmemorable that I can’t even recall their names… There’s the moe-girl and the other one. Really, I hope that in latter episodes they give those two more depth and/or screen-time, because they are in risk of staying forever in Ibara’s shadow.

Overall, this episode was pretty interesting, and really hooked me up to the series! I hope that it won’t let me down 😉

Now, something not Coppelion-related, it is the first time I’ve decided to give such a big and incisive review. Do you like it? Do you prefer reviews lighter and/or with more pics? Leave your opinions in the comments please ;). Also, I’ve been neglecting my blog lately because my midterms are starting, and my workload is getting bigger and bigger with studying and coordinating a student research program at my uni. Sorry!

Yours truly
